There are a couple of books as well two or three reports from French and American intels that Afghanistan is what started this whole mess. The story goes like this: Bush wanted to draw an oil pipeline from central Asia through Afghanistan and Pakistan. This would by-pass Iran and the whole Persian Gulf and more importantly provide a very dominant role for US in central Asia. The Taliban, who were literally dim-wit hill billies of Afghanistan, did not understand diplomatic protocols and rather than being understanding, the American envoy acted like cowboys. Rumour has it that at some point in time someone on the American envoy got fed up and said, "either you take our offer and sit on a carpet of gold or we will burry you under carpet of bombs" or something to that effect. Well the Afghan hill-billies did not like how the American hill-billies were talking to them and called off the whole thing. This was the beginning of their change of status from "freedom fighters" to "barbaric thugs". OBL had been planning his attack on US for some time, but could not do so without the Taliban ok. This he got after that meeting. The above is what I remember from several book summaries, blogs, internet articles, etc back in 2002.
