It is hard to fight demographics. Unless something really strange happens China will have the largest economy in the world by 2020 - 2040.

Don't sell us short. We are by far the dominant super power (economics, Military, and cultural).

Naturally, there is some resentment, envy, and other strange emotions directed towards us. Everyone else is playing catch up. By nature, the rest of the world will not let us get further ahead of the pack. Playing catch up is much easier than being the standard bearer. They can take short cuts to catch up.

Of course the gap will narrow - that is not difficult to see. Staying ahead and being the leader is not easy. One thing we can't do is play small ball - being reactionary is playing small ball. That is like playing while being scared.

It is relatively easy to say what we shouldn't do, but it is more difficult to say what we should be doing.

But being magnanimous and doing the right stuff (love thy neighbor) and all that other good stuff can't hurt.

"....Hillary. She already showed us a taste of what she thinks in the health care task force"

I gotta laugh. Back when Hillary tried to push this thru GWB was sitting in the owners box of the Texas Rangers. Should i hold the bad trades the team made back then against him? Peoples positions change and evolve. You would accept this on the right but have a double standard for her. She is carving out the Clinton centrist position of her hubby. She proves she learns from mistakes. OOPS republicans never make mistakes. I forgot.

China will have the largest economy in the world by 2020 - 2040.

Chinese per capita GDP is about $5,600 (2004 est.) - and with the wide income disparity between rich and poor that's not a good way of analyzing the purchasing power of the ordinary Chinese citizenry.

In contrast, US per capita GDP is $40,100 (2004 est.)

Taking a trend line and projecting it in the same direction into infinity is taking artistic license with economic facts. On the other hand, a lot of people on SI love their chart patterns . . . .
