To: RetiredNow who wrote (243510 ) 7/26/2005 5:20:06 PM From: tejek Respond to of 1572348 I get it completely. OBL is our enemy number 1. The neocon vision was to fight OBL by trying to take him out, but also by installing a Democracy in the heart of the Arab lands. First things first.......OBL masterminded 9/11. Get him out of the picture. Instead, he was allowed to hang around. Why?Let's face it. The first order root cause may be OBL. The second order root cause may be the West's dealing unfairly in the region and even going so far as to prop up and arm very bad men. However, the ultimate root cause of all this shit is one very simple thing. These people lack freedom and they lack a legitimate means to surface their frustrations in a peaceful way through a duly elected government. Assuming that's true, and I think it is, why do you give them cause to divert that anger towards the US? I am suggesting that we are acting as a scapegoat for the anger that by all rights should be directed at their leaders. We have become every ME dictator's new best friend. So the ultimate root cause is lack of democracy in the Middle East. Fascist type of ideologies don't find very fertile ground in democracies, which is why you never get a big movement like OBL's in the West. Instead, you get fringe groups that are easily controllable. OBL's movement isn't fringe and it's not easily controllable, because his ideology grows like bacteria in shit due to the lack of democracy in that region. For two decades, his ideology grew slowly........mainly because he did good things for some of the impoverished Muslims like build new roads and schools. At the time of 9/11, al Qa'ida was a very small group of people with limited power. No longer.........his ideology grows in leaps and bounds without his involvement. The neocons were trying to go after that ultimate root cause with their war in Iraq. It turns out that it is one hell of a lot more difficult to achieve, in large part due to the fact that OBL and his ilk don't want democracy. They want a theocracy. Neocons are clueless and deceptive. I would not put too much stock in what they say. They are just the latest version of the military/industrial complex that has ruled this country since WW II and not always to its benefit. You contend that taking out OBL would have solved all the problems in the Middle East. Nope. Never said that......however, it would have weakened al Qa'ida nicely. Too late now. I think that is naive. Democracy in the Middle East and open trade with the world is what will solve the problems over there. Yes, and that will take most of this century to happen.
