I found it also by driving, got stuck and loved it. Best place to visit ancient Greek sites complemented by wonderful crusader castles.

However, the Iraq invasion has even made Turkey dangerous.

It's interesting you should bring that up.

About a year I decided to improve my abysmal knowledge of geography and memorized the locations and a little info on every country on the globe.

Turned out to be an amazingly helpful exercise that literally opened the world to me. I would recommend it.

By the way, Turkey is in Asia and Europe, one of only two countries in the world that can make that claim. Obviously, Russia is the other.
