re: quality of organic produce

I agree wholeheartedly. I am an avid grower of tomatoes, squash, and blackberries. No pesticides, just a little bird netting and red plastic mulch for the tomatoes.

Not really. Did it on the market garden level for 10 years. The only labor really, was in the harvest. Planting was quick. Watering is quick. Making compost is EZ. Don't need to worry too much about bugs. Most of it balances out, good bugs and birds for the bad, beer for slugs, and the plants survive quite nicely.

Our biggest insect problem was the summer/fall raspberry crop; yellowjackets would do a major number, so we concentrated on the spring crop.
