Five bids to create solar city

ADELAIDE is set to shine as Australia's first solar city as part of a Federal Government energy-saving project.

Five consortia have lodged expressions of interest to create energy-efficient communities in South Australia under the Government's $75 million Solar Cities initiative.
The eight-year program aims to support at least four Solar City projects in grid-connected urban centres across Australia, including one in Adelaide.

Finance Minister and South Australian Senator Nick Minchin said Solar Cities was a pioneering concept designed to change the way South Australians thought about and used energy.

"I'm pleased that Adelaide has embraced the Solar Cities concept and is keen to find creative solutions to our future energy needs," Mr Minchin said.

South Australia had particular energy challenges, including peak electricity supply problems, Mr Minchin said.

He said the selection process to determine which private sector consortium would deliver Adelaide's Solar City.

"All proposals will be subject to rigorous assessment," he said.

"I expect ... to make an announcement on short-listing later this year with a final decision in 2006
