I read somewhere they are keeping it tied very close to the euro in anticipation of joining the EU, lost interest in it at that point might as well buy the euro.

I just made a quick calculation regarding the backing of the Swiss Franc by gold.

The Swiss National Bank has 1,290 tons of gold and as a result as of June 2005 Swiss M2 and M3 respectively are backed by 46% and 39%.
