1. People have begun to identify him a bit with Bush, even if he ideologically isn't there, and New Yorkers largely can't stand this administration

2. He beat Cuomo because people got sick of the entrenched, corrupt Democratic machine. In the last 11 years, the pendulum has swung, and we now have an entrenched, corrupt Republican machine. Now we'll get another dozen or so years of Democrats who come in, are relatively noble for half of it, and then become drunk with power after that.

3. Spitzer is a god here.

The only reasoning I could see behind a presidential run for Pataki is that the Dems aren't likely to have a Spitzer in the race for President. But maybe in 2012... a guy can dream, can't he? (sigh)
