I used to love to read about Veblen and I think I even read some of "The Theory of the Leisure Class" long ago. Every time I mow my lawn I think about his analysis of the American Lawn: that it was a display of useless grass, the uselessness of which was an exhibit of the owner's wealth. I keep trying to replace my display of wealth with groundcover.
