that if we spent a vast uneconomic amount on oil production infrastructure in the USA we could produce vastly more oil

I'm not suggesting that we do, one doesn't waste energy and resources to turn gold into yak butter when all the yak butter we need is abundant at cheap prices.

Here is the (abysmal) history of official estimations of oil reserves in the US:



1885, US Geological Survey: "Little or no chance of oil in California"

1891, US Geological Survey: Same prophecy by USGS for Kansas and Texas as in 1885 for California

1914, U.S. Bureau of Mines: "Total future production limit of 5.7 billion barrels, perhaps ten year supply.

1939, Department of the Interior: Reserves to last only thirteen years

1951, Department of the Interior, Oil and Gas Division: Reserves to last thirteen years.
