They may have even kept some drunk drivers off the street so he could drive more safely, kept some perverts from enticing his kids on the internet, pushed away some drug dealers from a sidewalk he was using, and even rescued his neighbor's cat from a tree.

Michael, it's the old problem of protection. Of course we need police and military services and prisons and a legal system. But what happens is that a good thing is taken to extremes. There's even jargon for it "mission creep".

It's an unusual bureaucracy that doesn't need more money, more power, more people, more control, more of everything.

Because there is a need, doesn't mean they get carte blanche.

In market situation, there are feedback loops to prevent things going out of control and expanding. When some business gets uppity, lean and hungry competitors offer a better service and the greedy ones go broke.

In government services such as police and military and other things, there's a limited feedback loop and those paying aren't the same people as those voting and those getting the benefits are different from those voting and paying.

So of course we need security. I pay more than my share, including to hire USS Enterprise and co to ensure Hu Jintao and his mates don't get too greedy. They'll expand their empire and rule the world if they get a chance. Their 50th anniversary celebrations looked like a Nuremburg rally to me.

We I said police haven't done anything for me directly, I meant personally, not as a general theme. I know they are busy dragging criminals to prison and trying to avoid various violent crimes as you described.

On the local bank business, I'm planning competition for said banks, so it'll be interesting to see if police protect my freedom to do so or imprison or shoot me as a dangerous competitor to the existing system. Since they are defending political interests, I have a fair idea who they will target. It won't be to defend my freedom
