Interesting anecdote about Fussell. I have heard from former students that he didn't abide any disagreement in his class, and that he was almost impossible to deal with. I suppose that writing a few landmark works uniting lit crit and history endows a sort of celebrity, but not quite the sort that exempts one from criticism.

In Class he posits the existence of an "X" class that is outside the class system and which rejects class markers. But doesn't it also meet the definition of a class insofar as its members can recognize one another through subtle cues (not vulgar markers, mind you), it has acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, and is insular and self-reinforcing? And it seems clear where "X" would fit in the hierarchy if Fussell were forced to assign it a slot. Nonetheless, it's an enjoyable book.
