I agree that simple demographics such a pop growth/decline don't tell the entire picture. Would be nice to see a plot of growth against some factored metric of age/productivity. Say a weighting factor for each 5 year segment from 20 to 65 or something like that. Multiply the population segment by the weighting factor and sum all results to get this composite population adjusted for productivity?

For China to really continue growing, they must generate more of a consumer society than the Japanese have. I don't know culturally if that is likely or not.
