Note that no hybrid in existence today gets 100 mpg.

Sorry mindmeld, your math is wrong.

The correct formula would be [Gas @ 25 mpg] - [Gas @ 100 mpg]
or

(12000/25) - (12000/100) = (480) - (120) = 360 gallons saved.

What you are calculating is how many gallons of gas you must consume before you have achieved 12000 extra miles driven. Because you are dividing by [extramiles/gallon].

Let's see, if you drive 12,000 miles per year, and get 20 miles per gallon (more reasonable in city traffic), then you will consume 12,000 / 20 = 600 gallons per year. If you were to get 60 mpg (your number of 100 is not available today, or if you plug-in your car to the net, then you must add the cost of electricity), then you will need 200 gallons ( 12,000 / 60 )

Difference is 400 gallons @ $2.40 = $960

I don't know about you, but 12,000 is on the low end for me, so let's make it an even $1000/year in savings

However, it is true that you might NOT get 60 mpg with a hybrid, but at any rate the savings should be higher than $389 / year.

using your numbers of 25 mpg and 100 mpg you'd get a savings of $864

(if you care about where you went wrong, the formula should be 12,000 / 25 - 12,000 / 100 => 480 -120 = 360 gallons saved)
