That explains why I don't get it, then. I have a close extended family spread out all over the country and a few close friends that I've had for a long time. I don't need celebrities.

The rise of celebrity culture parallels the move away from the extended family to the nuclear family, and even smaller units

I always thought it was a substitute for the nobility.
