Excellent. My kids have gone to public schools too and I'd say they are pretty moral and outstanding citizens. You wouldn't believe the debate my wife and I had about it too. We ultimately decided that saving money for college was more important than spending the money on pre-college private schools.

Having said that, if I'd had the money for both, I would have sent them to religious schools prior to college. Why?

1) Private relgious schools are ranked among the best schools in this country. The private school I went to was ranked #1 in my state and my entire class of 30 was automatically accepted to that state's public university, most of us with scholarships of some sort. Most of us went on to the nation's top 20 universities. All went to a university of some sort.

2) Private schools teach a strong moral framework that helps young kids build a foundation of values that will last them a lifetime. Public schools simply don't come anywhere near to it. I know, because my kids experienced it. I can see that in most cases public school teachers expect the parents to teach the kids morals. Whereas, in my private school, my teachers were like parents away from home. Having parental figures at home and at school is a doubly reinforcing mechanism for ensuring that the right morals are sinking in.

Say what you want, religion can be used to make for a pretty strong societal bond.

re: I went to a public school. Ninty percent of my graduating class went to college. It was one of the best hi schools in the state with several Merit scholarships winners each year. In addition, my school was half Christian/half Jewish........we learned that religion was a private affair best practiced in houses of worship. I would venture to say that most of my graduating class has gone on to lead very moral lives.

I went to a military <high> school... go figure.
