I think bush, cheney, rummy, rove & co bears some responsibilty as does the moveon.org left and the michael moore types. On Bills thread i often talked about the Reagan big tent party shrinking as less than true believers are thrown out. What we accuse sun&co of here, i have been accused of on bills thread. If you have a kind word to say about hillary or say she is a typical politician in so far as political positioning you are called every name in the book. The Swiftboaters were a classic example of demonizing moderate folks and giving them the boot from the party. If the dems can adopt big tent and find a way to get moderates like you and me back in, they will do what FDR and Reagan did before them. Mike

He is one of the extremists. Religious Right extremists have his ear every week and affect policy. As do the extreme anti-environment forces.

Extremism takes two to tango. Without Bush there would not have been as extreme a reaction. It all comes out of his style of politics that believes in pressing his advantage by polarizing the sides and waging a battle against the center.
