DMA,

People eat out to save money? This is crazy talk. Where the heck does he get this?

Kind of underscores the difference between affluent Americans and the French (or anyone else) :-)

Go out for fast food - say Boston Market - and spend $25 for a meal for a family. Or (since cooking at home is now 'special' in households with 2 professionals) you get porterhouses for the grill + deli and spend $50.

No doubt this illustrates the authors lifestyle.

But in the original article Krugman is trying to justify lower European standards of living by arguing they are actually living better. However, net migration between these 'better' places and the US is of course positive in our direction.

They send doctors, nurses, engineers and scientists and we lose a few starry eyed liberals. Its a great deal for us :-)

John

That's what I was thinking.
