Couldn't find the total estimates. indiaonestop.com "India still has the world’s largest number of poor people in a single country. Of its nearly 1 billion inhabitants, an estimated 350-400 million are below the poverty line, 75 per cent of them in the rural areas." Back in the 80s I discussed this subject with Indians at various levels in the business world(Delhi, Bangalore). When asked to compare China and India they said that India had not increased its poverty population while it had protected its free society. China, on the other hand had a low poverty level but most of the population was poor and all were in a repressive society. In Bangalore one often saw dead people in the streets. Not as often as in Delhi or Calcutta(1985-87). Never saw that in China(1983-88).
