The "power of free markets" is what eventually undermined the Soviet Union and brought down the Berlin Wall. We simply don't practice what we preach with respect to Cuba. It's probably the power of that anti-Castro lobby in Miami that prevents it. Who in his right mind would want that lobby to turn on him? Look how important Florida has become in US Presidential politics.

I swear that Carter was getting ready to drop the embargo late in his administration. Castro saw this coming so he dumped his mental institutions into boats at the Mariella port near Havana and set them sail to Florida's shores. That ended any hope that Carter could engage in sensible action at the end of his term in office. He would have had no public support for dropping the embargo at that touchy time.
