If I may put my two cents in, I can tell you they are even more complex than the average hybrid, the R series SUV has two electric motors instead of a single. That said, Lexus has probably the best reliability record in the industry for it's conventional gas powered cars. I still say it's probably gonna cost you way more if you keep the car for 10 years due to new tech and unforseen battery/powertrain glitches. Factor in possible depreciation woes and battery replacement costs, if you are looking to save bucks gas is gonna have to go quite a bit higher (possible) for you to make out over the long run. As for those battery power conversions that Mindmeld is talking about, unless costs come way down they are basically for the lunatic fringe, like those guys pushing their 'vegetable oil powered' cars...

Best regards,
John

PS - Just to give you an idea of the price premium, if you go to:

carsdirect.com

and plug in the Lexus RX330 and RX400h you will find that you can buy the RX330 with leather interior for around 38k. The hybrid RX400h goes for list, which is 49k.

My opinion is that Toyota hybrids are the best, because they are FULL hybrids, whereas Honda's are light hybrids used just to add more horsepower and a little more mileage. Out of Toyota's lineups, I like the Prius best because it has all the cool new technology on the interior of the car too, not just in the engine. I personally will probably by next years Camry Hybrid, because I need a car a little bigger than a Prius. I'm of course hoping that the Camry Hybrid will get 50+ mpg.
