Popular cable shows in Cuba:

"I married a ten dollar-ionnair"
"Survivor - everybody gets to play"
"Fear Factor - meet Fidel's brother Raul"
"You're Executed!"

No television other than the 2 Cuban government run networks. No coverage of the World Series, for example. This is so, even though there is immense interest in it. I used to take videotapes of it to my friends.

The Cuban government pirates HBO movies, subtitles them (very professionally, I might add), and shows them two nights a week.

The island stops virtually on cue at 7 p.m. on weeknights to watch the two soap opera series broadcast nationally: one Cuban and the other either Colombian, Brazilian, or Argentine. I have walked around Santa Clara, Cuba, on a number of occasions to see how the soap opera is watched. Crowds of upwards to 10 or 15 huddle in front of little black-and-white televisions all through the town while I've been known to be the only one on the streets. I'm not kidding.

I routinely visited Santa Clara during my "Cuba years." It's a neat little town where Ché Guevara is buried and Fidel routinely speaks to the masses. Fidel has virtually no support on the island. Masses are assembled for his speeches by letting people off work and compelling them to go.
