I have long thought that buying a block of Russian launchers, Soyuz for manned, Proton for heavy lift, made much more economic sense. Can you imagine the USA doing that? We could most likely buy and launch 10 Soyuz for each Shuttle flight, and maybe half that number of Protons. Best to use their launch sites as well, as that would be way cheaper. Heck outsource the whole damn space program. In another 5 years we could have WalMart administer the contract using the Chinese. <G>

What the private space industry needs is a "killer app". I don't think space tourism is going to drive it very far.
