I'm sure there were many people who thought fighting Hitler wasn't worth the cost in lives and money too. But it turns out that it directly lead to the Democratization and alliance with America of the countries involved in that war (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and America becoming the world's only superpower and the wealthiest nation on earth. The long term dividends were worth taking Hitler on.

Its no secret that there were many Americans who were opposed to the war and that there was a significant opposition in Congress led by the GOP. That was why America was so late into WW II.

The primary reason Americans did not want to get involved was because they were sick of European politics and European squabbles.......sound familiar? Behind that thinking was another issue.........the largest ethnic group in this country at that time were German Americans. Many of them still had some sympathies for their ancestral home and did not want a another war with Germany.

I hardly think that the democratization of Germany, Italy and Japan was worth the heavy cost many people including 6 million Jews paid for WW II. That is crazy and sick thinking. Its good that something positive happened to come from it but to suggest we go to war to make good things happen is a ridiculous premise.

As for WW II making the US a superpower and the wealthiest nation in the world, trust me when I tell you that would have happened with or without WW II.

An interesting take on WW II and the US participation:

The long term dividends will be worth bringing Democracy to the Middle East. You just can't see it now, because your thinking is way too short term.

No. Its because if there are any benefits to be gained......and frankly, I think they are far and few in between......will require a long term and very costly commitment that I am not prepared to make.
