Al, like I said before, if someone is beating up or going to beat up my wife, I'm not going to stand by and tell her to turn the other cheek. That's not what it's all about. You're stretching the teaching to the extent where the original point gets lost.

The original point is that Jesus is busting up Old Testament legalism and getting to the heart of the matter. It's not "eye for an eye" just for the sake of keeping the law, it's rather "Why was 'eye for an eye' enacted in the first place?" then illustrating what the human heart ought to pursue using the most ideal case.

A return to legalism, even with "turn the other cheek," is exactly the wrong thing to do. Rather, the heart should aim for a state where "turn the other cheek" comes naturally. We may never get there, but as long as it's possible, we should make every effort to try.

As for Iraq, I'll let you decide whether that's evidence of Bush's hypocritical heart, or whether Bush is carrying out a duty to defend the innocent. I'm pretty sure God has His ideas, but I'm not entirely sure His ideas will work out the way any of us intend.
