Kerry and Hagel are lot more similar than those BS labels say. And a "lifetime" rating doesn't mean much. People change over the decades. Old style liberalism for example is finito. And old-style Barry Goldwater conservatism is dead as a door nail. What we have now are common sense, honest moderates trying to minimize the corruption in DC and trying to see both sides of the issues while fighting for things they really believe in. Both Kerry and Hagel fit this mold. Both are quite independent thinkers and don't kowtow to the party line. That's why both would make excellent presidents. Bush-Cheney have killed conservatism and replaced it with a culture of hypocrisy, greed, dishonesty and corruption.
