The Mormons moved to Utah because of religious difficulties they had experienced back east, such as the minor matter of their founder being shot dead. They had a persecution complex at the time, and the US Army was in fact concerned about some of their dealings with Indians. Religion was their life, to say they were religious is an understatement. For a much more modest in scale, but modern incident read the following book: Under The Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith . Islamic radicals are not the only violent religious nuts running around.
