Exactly. Perhaps we were in agreement all along; I just couldn't extract that from your earlier post that this was so. "Whats wrong with ATM's or the grocery store. Mine have video cameras. Further, the transactions are traceable. If it bothers you, ware a wig, sunglasses, avoid banks and only use cash." The thrust of my question was, -- Why should anybody care about public cameras, a la UK style, since you're already on 'Candid Camera' here in so many different venues anyway? Perhaps I got the wrong msg from your polling question. "Are you implying that the technology is not possible, or that it is useless. The technology is easily doable, I suspect it is commercially available. And it clearly has utility. If someone were to jump in a get away vehicle, the ability to track that for a mile or more while directing cops would be useful."

As I remember, cameras were installed in the UK to assist in identifying criminals. I think there was some hope that crime would also be further reduced because potential criminals would realize that their chances of being caught on tape were exceedingly great. I was surprised to learn the other day that the crime rate in London was higher than New York City as recently as 2002 or 2003, according to the figures I saw. I thought just about anywhere in the UK probably had a lower crime rate than a comparable place in the US. (Probably because the murder rate is lower.) With that in mind, I wonder how effective the use of cameras really is. I know it has been used to great effect in sensational cases, such as the terrorist bombings and kidnappings, but am curious if it has had any effect on the overall crime rate. That said, I did run across an article somewhere on the net that mentioned that the use of cameras in public parks was quite effective in clearing out the dope dealers, hookers, and bathroom sex seekers.
