The truth hurts doesn't it. I'm not the only former delegate that spoke out against Bush's lies and volunteered for Kerry ... but I was disappointed that there weren't more honest Republicans.

When I was a delegate to the RNC (many years ago) I was shocked at how many people were openly racist (mostly against blacks, but also hispanics).

At first I thought they had been deprived ... I was from California and had been fortunate to know many people of different skin colors and I knew that skin color didn't make a person good or bad. But as I've grown older, I realize their bigotry was driven by something entirely different.

Now I believe that some people, instead of judging themselves on their own life, judge themselves by comparisons to others. It doesn't matter how seemingly successful they are - this is a character flaw that runs deep.

In the '60s, these people put down blacks. Now they are religious fundamentalists and put down non-fundamentalists (not all religious fundamentalists are bigots, but many bigots are religious fundamentalists). Unfortunately the GOP has always pandered to bigots to help win elections. Now it is has gone so far that the party is ignoring its most basic principles. The GOP has lost its way.

"Republicans used to believe in balanced budgets. Republicans used to believe in fiscal responsibility, limited international entanglements and limited government. We have lost our way."
Senator Chuck Hagel, Nov 2003
