I hope so. <g> But I am and always will be a bit of redneck (grew up in logging country up Cow Creek, OR) middle class type with a liberal arts leftist education delivered from one of those bastions of liberal think tanks in Eugene Oregon. < Several weeks earlier the ROTC building and part of the registrar’s office had been burned down and partially blown up.>> <<<My mind drifted back to 1968, 1969, 1970. I remembered radical students barring the doors of buildings to keep students from going to class during a “shut down.” I also recall an altercation in the Student Union involving a cadre of Black Power students, some with guns, and all standing aggressively in a phalanx in front of the door into the rest of the Union, their black berets cocked and arms folded. The anti-war activists were not easy to ignore. In one of my classes (a big one of two or three hundred students) the activists burst in carrying a wooden coffin painted black, protesting the war and then throwing bags of animal blood over seats, students and the floor. Even the faculty got in on the action. “Progressive” younger faculty who prided themselves on “taking the kids seriously” held teach-ins instead of class or rather than teaching the subject, ranted about politics even then demanding agreement. More subtle teachers tortured texts into anachronistic statements of Marxist principles. Shakespeare. Chaucer. Edmund Burke.>>>>> It was quite a heady time concerning war, race relations, women's rights etc. A real time for political change. In my mind true freedom reigned in the streets. Campus social, political, personal rights issue battles, war protests (They were right in my mind BTW) would now be met by anti tank black jack booted thugs of political and social controlling arms of the current righteous administration. But all in all I have always worked in sawmills, on road crews and then the last 20 years in the home loan credit business. Middle class is not a bad way to ride. I hope I get filthy rich off of PM stocks. Would be a great coup to make a lot of money and give most of it to charitable causes. Tom
