Grandma needs to grow up. She should have gotten over having tantrums before her age hit double digits.

Karen,

I'm going out a limb here, but I don't think, IMO, you are going to get a lotta
'Hoo-Rahs' for that post...

Mike

Let's hear your reaction when they do a strip search on you... A friend of mine did have that happen to her, down to panties...She was TOTALLY incensed....and has every right to be. She had changed her ticket at the last minute. And certainly fits no possible profile that I can think of....Other than she is pretty active in her local county government.

Oh, really? What if someone attempts to hijack a plane with a weapon hidden in a bodily orifice? Will you then be prepared to drop your drawers and moon for an inspection when boarding a plane? Feeling up little old ladies, retired teachers from Wisconsin, no less, does absolutely nothing to enhance airline security. The terrorists are almost always young Muslim men.

Wasting tax dollars by conducting a blanket assault on the vast majority of citizens who obviously fit no terrorist profile isn't just wrong, it's stupid. And, as has been pointed out before, no one is going to get away with hijacking an airplane in the future anyway, under any circumstances, as every able bodied person on that plane will be out of their seats and onto the SOB(s) immediately, at the first sign of any such attempt.

Ridiculous and I totally agree with you. I fly frequently (monthly) and my husband weekly. I have never been treated with disrespect. Being taken to "another area" usually means a few feet away from the original screening area and the wand search and patdown - which I have undergone many times--is completely inoffensive and non-invasive. I would never, ever react as this woman did.

I hardly meet the criteria for potential terrorist-- being more of the blonde, blue-eyed grandma type-- and while I believe we need to profile more than we do, I understand the seesaw we are on and willingly comply.

Long ago I read Corrie Ten Boom's books and still remember one incident of which she wrote. She was traveling from Europe on a speaking tour and was stopped at an airport. The guard questioned her about something in her luggage and her first reaction was to feel offended. How could he not know who she was? How honest she was! She was, after all, a Christian speaker! A Holocaust survivor! And then she realized that, of course, he DIDN'T know who she was. He was just doing his job. He had only his rules and her current behavior on which to judge her.

So just because I look like a grandma and know that I live a fairly exemplary life, is no guarantee that I am not some nut ready to blow up something. Until we stop seeing ourselves from an "I am the center of the universe" POV, we will continue to take unreasonable offense and neglect the arguments that should be made about efficacy and best use of resources.

Sounds like this elderly lady was reacting out of shock and fear. Probably had never been treated like this in her long life. This agent needs to be taught how to do her job without terrorizing old ladies.
