Well although recycling aluminum cuts energy use a lot, the electrolytic process that separates it from the fused alumina in the first place takes huge amounts of electricity. Originally there were surpluses of electricity in the Pacific Northwest from hydropower, but now there's a shortage. Anyway, aluminum production costs are closely tied to energy costs.
