I realize that for some people labeling someone else a homosexual seems like a "smear" but that whole concept strikes me as very denigrating to homosexuals. Would we say "You tried to smear me by implying I was black"? Would we say "You tried to smear me by implying I was a Jew"? I hope not. The very idea that such a thought about someone is a "smear" is part of the problem.

While some unenlightened folks may think of it as a "smear", I think the rest of us need to resist that kind of thinking. I always got a kick out of it when people would "insult" me by saying I was a lesbian (which happened on SI more than a few times)- because quite frankly the lesbians I know are some of the best people around. The gay community has amazing resources- look at their buying power in proportion to their size!

Just my opinion, of course.
