Re: Rebuild America

I would argue that the Interstate highways are in relatively good condition. It is the state highways and city streets which are suffering, and those are not (and should not be) the responsiblity of the federal government.

Re: modernize the electric grid and bring efficiency standards for appliances up to levels already enjoyed in Japan and Europe.

This would require tax breaks to encourage people to take risks. But the dems have opposed tax breaks to all but those at the bottom of the economic ladder. I just don't see this one taking off.

Re: Put the PATRIOT Act under scrutiny by creating a monitoring board and force reauthorization every two years, so if it's being abused, we can junk it. We're supposedly fighting for freedom in other countries, no reason to destroy our basic freedoms here in the process.

I would argue that this is not a new idea....many in Congress want exactly this.

When I refer to new ideas, I mean we should look at entirely new ways of doing things. Clearly, we cannot afford social security the way it is structured. When it was implemented, it was not designed to be a one-stop retirement program, and it was designed when people were not living nearly as long. "New ideas" means looking at alternatives to the same old same old such as just keeping the current plan in place without changing it for the times. Clearly(IMO), we cannot afford it.

Likewise, school vouchers address the problem of underperforming schools. And the dems oppose this. What new ideas have the dems offered in the last 40 years besides more of the same old thing? They simply want to keep the status quo in place.....and the times they are a changin'

Luckily, the voters see this.

JMHO.
