Very good advice! Always drive defensively as if the other guy is out to get you. Scan the roadsides for animals, people, and obstructions. Never assume that the other guy will stop at a stop sign or yield sign. Always be ready to steer away or brake.

About 30 years ago my boss attended the wedding of a sparkling young couple. They were killed on their honeymoon by a car that ran a stop sign. Totally senseless.

I have a relative (for the time being) by marriage who is a California Tailgater. He nearly killed us twice within a couple of hours. Once when the traffic was stopped suddenly for a grass fire and once when his tire blew out. I refuse to ride with him anymore, which will be all too soon if I never see him again.

1 car length for every 10 miles per hour is the rule.

Not always enough. Think about 5 car lengths at 50 mph: at 18 ft/car length = 1.23 seconds to close that 5 car length gap. Can you get your foot off the gas and on the brake and stop your car under control in that amt of time if a red light runner T-bones the car in front of you in less than 1-1/4 seconds? The safer gap is a one second gap per 10 mph.

One of our good friends knows Maria and her family well....They have done quite a few things to help the family do fundraisers for part of Maria's care....What a TERRIBLE accident that was...

Something similar happened in Atlanta, a guy had just left HD with a dryer tied up in the back of his pick up truck.. The dryer flew out and a man in the car behind was killed. The driver of the pick up truck was arrested for homicide..and the family sued HD.
