John Lindh = John Walker Lindh, the California surfer dude who joined the Taliban. What profile does he fit?

Depends on when you looked at him.

The shoe bomber, a guy whose looks marked him as someone who needed to be searched to the max, was not body searched despite the fact that he carried no luggage and a backpack full of Islamist tapes, and had paid for his one way ticket in cash. I suppose the French were being PC.

El Al of course properly told him to take a hike.

What's your point?

You have to admit that given his appearance and behavior, Lindh fit the profile of an Islamist terrorist. Under the profiling scenario, he would have been nabbed.

Now if he had a haircut and dressed like a California surfer dude, he would have got by security. Have you seen any Islamists doing that lately?

I personally do not think it is all that difficult to screen out the people who are going to bomb us based on profiling. At least until they start recruiting California surfer dudes and those dudes don't change their habits, which might preclude them from fitting in with the Islamists.

Nobody should believe they will never be searched, but some people are just more likely to need it than others. We can tell which fairly easily. However, we have to abandon our abhorrence of profiling, at least to some degree.

There is a close parallel in the right to keep and bear arms, which as you know is protected under the Second Amendment. As long as the bad guys are never too sure whether I am armed or not, they are going to think twice before busting into my house. The Second Amendment right must be protected from that standpoint alone.

Unfortunately, he does not fit the dead terrorist profile but his short sentence may give him another chance.
