Been wondering about that. What about the detonators, and the wires from the detonators to the explosives? Also, I assume if it's a nail bomb they'll pick up that.

Also, I wonder if the operators can dial them down


Blasting caps (detonators) can be made with no metal parts.

Wires are not required for a non-electric firing circuit... similar to what is used for a grenade which has a 4-5 second built-in delay. A suicide bomber does not need the delay and instantaneous firing circuits are easy to prepare.

Manufactured Fuze igniters are all plastic except for one very small part and I'd bet that has been replaced now. And the igniter is not required. 100% Non-metallic field expedient ignition methods are readily available.
Think shoe bomber. He was attempting to ignite a fuze with a match. That is difficult to do unless you have been taught the easy way. With a little bit more training he would have succeeded.

Since we are talking aircraft...nails are not necessary.

Yes, the metal detectors are adjustable.
