In the "old" days in the 60's, since the wife was part of the "team", It should still be today. From reading the article, he was hired by Ford directly for this job. He was not a transfer. And his wife was a new bride married just before the move knowing she was going there. Sounds like the two older kids were her's by a previous marriage. I wouldn't have hired him in those circumstances for the job. However, qualified candidates who spoke Mandaran must have been like hen's teeth to find. A Morman who did his mission in Taiwan was a godsend to the recruiter.
