Asia Fund View: China Fund Assets Growth To Stay Modest
By Rita Raagas De Ramos

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--China's fund management assets will likely grow at a modest pace until after the mainland's stock market recovers from its four-year slump, experts said.

"Unless the stock market recovers in the second half of the year, I don't see the possibility of any dramatic asset growth similar to what we saw in 2004," said Linbo Fan, senior research analyst and Greater China specialist at fund research firm Lipper.

Assets in open-end funds - which became the norm in China since 2002 - grew 41% to US$42.60 billion at the end of June from US$30.04 billion at the end of 2004. That's a significant slowdown from the 242% growth in assets at end-2004 and 72% growth in assets at end-2003. sg.biz.yahoo.com
