DEBT-EQUITY SWAP

An agreement converting a developing country's debt to foreign equity in a domestic firm. The conversion is effected either directly or through portfolio investment. In some countries, a debt-equity swap can involve a resident bringing back foreign exchange, rather than a foreign national.
