Unpleasant consequences are one way we learn not to do stupid things anymore. It's called (in twelve step parlance) "hitting bottom."

People who tend to function well in society have what is called (in twelve step parlance) a "high bottom." You don't have to wake up in a strange town in a strange bed with a strange sex partner to realize that it's time to change your ways. Nor do you need to come to after wrapping your car around a light pole.

I guess the worst one I ever saw was the guy who could actually drive with a .37, and survived a .42. He was one of those guys who keep driving even after they lose their license, and eventually the court just locks them up and throws away the key for as long as the law will let them do it.

But they've always got an excuse, and can't face the truth.

I remember, when I was a kid, seeing people driving down the road weaving from lane to lane, hardly conscious, but they'd only get a slap on the wrist back then.
