Mr. Hackett called Mr. Bush a "chicken hawk" for failing to serve in Vietnam and "a cheerleader for the enemy" for challenging Islamic militants to "bring it on" against American troops. He also sharply questioned his policies on tax cuts and Social Security.

Boy, Mr. Hackett, a major in the USMC, belongs to a different USMC then I did in my day. Seems he wants us to be POLITICALLY CORRECT against the ENEMY. If "bring it on" bothers him the stuff we used to say would probably make the sweetie FAINT. jdn

Republican gets 52% of the vote in a district that normally votes 70% Republican.

Re: "...But Mr. Hackett's showing was unexpectedly strong in this district, a Republican bastion that snakes along the Ohio River from affluent Cincinnati suburbs to struggling Appalachian hamlets."

Yep.

Pretty narrow win for the Rep. though (just 3%) in the foreshortened (just 7 weeks) campaign for the special election.

And, that in a 'safe' Rep. district that polled 64% for Bush.

--- I expect Hackett will pull a second tour in Iraq next year, then be back to run in the *regular* election in 2008.
