A CBS spokesman stated, "We now believe it would be inappropriate to air the report so close to the presidential election." [8]

But did you catch the even stranger part. The above comment is nonsense! CBS instead aired the Killian documents. Clearly airing them was even more of an issue for the looming elections. CBS made a choice as to which one to chase, and they chased a bogus one. The truth is, the Niger document case is not great either, in that both then & now, it has not be solved. All they could have produced back then is a trail ending with a sort of freelance agent, who seems to be a duped middleman. Other than that, it is all conjecture.

>>>In September 2004, the CBS News program 60 Minutes decided to delay a major story on the forgeries because such a broadcast might influence the 2004 U.S. presidential election. A CBS spokesman stated, "We now believe it would be inappropriate to air the report so close to the presidential election." [8]

What a joke our "free and responsible" media has become! One would think that such reportage is most appropriate when the people can use it to make an informed decision and NOT after the fact...but I guess "responsible" reporting means journalism when it yields no material effects. :(

I found that this sort of thing was worse in France.

Another issue is if you do come out with such a sensitive story right near the elections, you *really* need to have the facts straight. Can you imagine the fallout if the information was not accurate and it did impact the election ?
