You might be surprised. Take the recent case of the brain dead woman who was kept on live support until she was 24 weeks along. Now that is almost 6 months, the doctors wanted more, but they couldn't get it. Have you ever seen what happens to these very early births? Often they are mentally retarded with life long hearing, visual and respiratory problems. Given the costs to insurance companies and the parents, if there was anyway to avoid these burdens, they would. But all attempts at maturing embryos ex-utero have failed after a few days. The hormonal and chemical requirements are very extreme, changing over time. There is just so much we don't have the slightest clue about.

I personally would like to see it done for the reasons you detail. But I am not particularly optimistic.
