We need answers, we need hope, we desperately grasp at what promises these things.

Gore Vidal (not my favorite author by a lot, but I learned from this one and enjoyed it) wrote a book, "Julian", historical fiction, that really presses this point.

I admit to being a sucker for magical realism myself.

It's a "hard to define" subject. The term was originally coined to describe some novels by Spanish authors. The difference between it and "Fantasy" is that it is not "what if?"

It postulates the real world with a different "real world" in it. My favorite movie using this technique is Ellen Burstyn's Resurrection. Get the DVD if you have missed it. The most recent was the HBO series called, Carnivàle.
