In the greater scheme of things, China's reserves of US Dollars are not that great. They come out to about $550 per Chinese citizen, or $2,200 per family of four.

Now $2,200 is a lot of money but its not going to buy you a car, even in China. They have additional reserves in other currencies, but China has a lot of problems that need to be fixed in the future with new infrastructure needing a lot of imported supplies and expertise.

I think their currency surplus is a lot about nothing.
