I visited Hawaii in the eighties, when the Japanese were looking like they might just BUY America. The place was flooded with Japanese tourists. One thing I noted walking around were clumps of Japanese at every crosswalk, waiting for the "Walk" sign. All the mainlanders and locals were just walking on across if there wasn't any traffic, but not the Japanese...
