WAITSFIELD, Vt., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northern Power Systems, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: DESC - News), today announced that it now offers comprehensive operations and maintenance (O&M) services for commercial and industrial owners of distributed generation (DG) and remote power systems.
The newly established Northern Power Services division is currently providing O&M service on 18 megawatts of distributed generation and remote power systems. Comprised of both Northern and non-Northern designed systems, the 17 sites include contracts with commercial office buildings, large industrial facilities, and a university. Northern has multi-year agreements in place that are expected to account for approximately $2 million in revenue for the new division in 2006.

Marketed as the PowerAdvantage(TM) O&M program, the service provides ongoing electrical and mechanical support, and is designed to offer customers a number of benefits, including better overall system reliability, efficiency and performance. The program offers customers level pricing and a single point of responsibility for the performance of the entire DG or remote power system. The service is further enhanced by monthly power asset trending and reporting via the company's proprietary SmartView(TM) monitoring and control software.

The Northern Power Services division offers a choice of four service levels:

1) Gold service contracts include daily system operation and maintenance,
remote system monitoring, troubleshooting, corrective maintenance and
repair for the life of the contract, warranty support, annual operating
planning, permitting, and hazardous waste disposal.
2) Silver service contracts include scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
3) Bronze service contracts provide simple scheduled maintenance required
by the system's equipment manufacturers.
4) Field service, commissioning and troubleshooting services provide
support to international oil & gas and telecommunications clients. This
service is done on a time and material basis and varies based upon the
geographic location and duration of the service.

Each level of service extends beyond the normal system commissioning activities that are a regular part of completing a DG or remote power system project.

The PowerAdvantage program is designed to help customers reduce operating risk and expenses by offering a fixed cost for corrective maintenance and repairs, and also enable customers with full O&M service to meet regulatory efficiency requirements and thus, in some instances, qualify for state-funded financial incentives. PowerAdvantage O&M support is also designed to help customers maintain compliance with air quality and other permit-required regulations.

Northern Power has a 30-year history of providing field service support for its own remote power systems, and believes there is a need in the broader market for a reputable operations and maintenance service provider.

"We set up the Services division and created the PowerAdvantage O&M program because we believe today's customers need greater security in the availability, quality and price of their power," noted Charles Curtis, Northern Power's vice president of on-site sales.

"The engineers who design, build and test our systems know them best and -- most importantly -- know how to keep them up, running and delivering the cost and efficiency advantages," Mr. Curtis added.

"The long-term maintenance agreements we signed over the past three months cover 28 DG systems," stated Darren Jamison, Northern Power's chief operating officer. "We believe the initial market demand and acceptance has been exceptional, and we anticipate that we will continue to add contracts in major domestic markets including California, New York and New England, as well as those in remote areas." He added, "We believe PowerAdvantage not only meets a growing customer demand for after sale service but also could give Northern a higher-margin, recurring revenue source."
