As an official military term Special Forces refers only to the group that are sometimes unofficially called "the Green Berets".

But as a matter of common English usage (and dictionary definitions derive from usage) it refers to any type of special operations force.

I guess living in this foreign country of Northern Idaho, I get a warped sense of reality. Everyone here knows the difference.
They do in NC too.

So does the net...

The United States Army Special Forces —also known as the Green Berets or simply Special Forces (capitalized)— is a Special Operations Force of the U.S. Army trained for unconventional warfare and special operations. The force was founded by Aaron Bank and their official headgear is the green beret.

SAS and SEALs are "special forces", but they are not "Special Forces".

They do not call themselves Special Forces nor special forces.
