RE:"History? Or recent history. Wasn't anybody allowed to settle down in any other country much more easily till the barriers were put in place? Were these barriers existing before nation states concept became strong."

What barriers? What nation state are you talking about.

If US adopted the same immigration policy as the nations from where the people want to come in from...immigration as we now know it would come to a dead stop.

There was a time when we had the green light on for all the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" we could cram in here.

We put it on the Statue of Liberty in NY Harbor:

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I guess we should take it down, or at least put up a notice that it no longer is an operative policy!
